Gŵyl Gregynog yw'r ŵyl gerdd glasurol hynaf yng Nghymru, a sefydlwyd gan Gwendoline a Margaret Davies ym 1933. Y chwiorydd, sef perchnogion preifat olaf Neuadd Gregynog rhwng 1920 a 1963, oedd hefyd yn gyfrifol am sefydlu Gwasg Gregynog, un o weisg preifat gorau Ewrop, ym 1922, ac am wneud casgliad bendigedig o weithiau celf a cherfluniau Argraffiadaeth, a adawyd i Amgueddfa Genedlaethol Cymru, Caerdydd, yn eu hewyllysiau.
Gregynog is Wales' oldest classical music festival. founded by the sisters Gwendoline and Margaret Davies at their home, Gregynog Hall, in 1933. Among their many philanthropic and artistic ventures, the sisters wished to develop music education in Wales. After attempts to establish a Conservatoire were thwarted by the First World War, in 1919 they endowed the future Master of the King's Music, Henry Walford Davies, as first Gregynog Professor of Music at the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, and Director of the National Council of Music. The sisters converted the Billiard Room to a Music Room and in 1929 established an Estate Choir. Elgar, Holst and Vaughan Williams were visitors to the Hall in this period.
Yn sgil perfformiad o Benedicite Ralph Vaughan Williams, dan gyfarwyddyd y cyfansoddwr, ym 1932, datblygodd Côr Gregynog, ensemble o weithwyr yr ystâd a phobl leol eraill oedd wedi perfformio am y tro cyntaf erioed yn y Neuadd ym 1929, yn asgwrn cefn cyfres gyntaf Gwyliau Gregynog rhwng 1933-38. Hefyd yn perfformio roedd Jelly d'Arányi, Leila Mégane ac Elsie Suddaby, tra ymysg y gynulleidfa roedd George Bernard Shaw a Joyce Grenfell. Derbyniodd y Côr wahoddiad i ymddangos yng Nghyngherddau Brenhinol Neuadd Albert Llundain ym 1935 a 1938 a ddarlledwyd nifer o droeon ar y BBC, gan gynnwys rhaglen fyw o St Matthew Passion gan Bach o'r Ystafell Gerdd adeg Pasg 1939.
From 1933 to 1938, the sisters held the first Gregynog Festivals of Poetry and Music, directed by Walford Davies and attended by friends such as George Bernard Shaw and Joyce Grenfell. Artists included Adrian Boult, Jelly d'Aranyi and Elsie Suddaby. The Gregynog Choir was broadcast live from the Hall in Bach's St Matthew Passion at Easter 1939, just before the outbreak of the Second World War brought this first creative period to a close.
Ar ôl yr Ail Ryfel Byd, a marwolaeth Gwendoline Davies ym 1951, Ian Parrott oedd cyfarwyddwr ail gyfres o Wyliau rhwng 1956-61. Parrott oedd un o olynwyr Walford Davies fel Athro Cerdd Gregynog yn Aberystwyth. Roedd Evelyn Rothwell (Y Fonesig Barbirolli), Redvers Llewellyn a Helen Watts ymysg yr unawdwyr amlwg ddaeth yno i berfformio. Cafwyd perfformiadau cyntaf o gyfansoddiadau dau o'i fyfyrwyr mwyaf disglair hefyd, sef William Mathias a David Harries.
Following the Second World War and the death of Gwendoline Davies in 1951, the Festival was revived by the new Gregynog Professor of Music, Ian Parrott, from 1956-61. William Mathias and David Harries gave first performances of their compositions in the Festival as students of Professor Parrott, and students also strengthened the Gregynog Choir with featured soloists such as Redvers Llewellyn and Helen Watts.
Ar ôl i Margaret Davies farw ym 1963, cafodd Gregynog ei throi yn Ganolfan Gynadledda i Brifysgol Cymru. Mewn Gŵyl unigol ym 1972, cafwyd datganiad gan Benjamin Britten, Peter Pears ac Osian Ellis.
After the death of Margaret Davies in 1963, Gregynog became a Conference Centre of the University of Wales. A one-off Festival was held in 1972 and featured a recital by Benjamin Britten, Peter Pears and the harpist Osian Ellis during his time as a Gregynog Arts Fellow.
Cafodd y drydedd gyfres, sef y gyfres bresennol, o wyliau ei hatgyfodi gan y tenor Anthony Rolfe Johnson yn 1988. Roedd Gŵyl Gregynog yn parhau i ddenu artistiaid rhyngwladol - yn eu mysg John Lill a Benjamin Luxon - ac i greu cyfleoedd i gerddorion ifainc addawol fynd ymlaen i ddatblygu gyrfaoedd disglair, megis John Mark Ainsley, Frederick Kempf a Bryn Terfel.
The third and present series of the Festival started in 1988 under the direction of the international tenor Anthony Rolfe Johnson and has continued each summer since. Tony's direction attracted a number of leading singer colleagues to perform at the Hall as well as several brilliant emerging artists, including John Mark Ainsley, Frederick Kempf a Bryn Terfel .
Ar ôl i Tony ymddeol yn 2006, cafodd Rhian Davies, soprano, hanesydd cerddoriaeth a darlledwraig, ei phenodi fel Cyfarwyddwraig Artistig. Erbyn heddiw, mae Gŵyl Gregynog wedi ennill ei lle fel un o brif ddigwyddiadau diwylliannol Cymru a Phrydain, ac mae'n adeiladu ar dreftadaeth unigryw cerddoriaeth siambr, corawl a cherdd gynnar Gregynog trwy gynnwys perfformiadau gan artistiaid rhyngwladol o'r safon uchaf posib. Ymysg yr enwau sydd wedi perfformio yng Ngregynog dros flynyddoedd diweddar mae Les Talens Lyriques, Accademia Bizantina, The Sixteen, Hesperion XXI, The Nash Ensemble, ac Academy of St Martin-in-the-Fields.
Rhian Davies, the soprano, music historian and broadcaster, became Artistic Director following Tony's retirement in 2006. Gregynog Festival is now firmly established as one of the premier cultural events in the UK and builds on the unique heritage of chamber, choral and early music at Gregynog by programming performances by international artists of the highest quality. Amongst those who have appeared at the Festival in recent seasons are Jordi Savall and Hesperion XXI, Accademia Bizantina/Ottavio Dantone, Academy of St Martin-in-the-Fields, The Nash Enemble, Le Concert Spirituel/Herve Niquet, Ricercar Consort, The King's Singers, The Sixteen, Tenebrae, Vox Luminis and The Tallis Scholars
